About Cadence CF20 Ian Gordon Micro Spey Rods

Although they can be described as similar to that of switch rods, Microspey are in fact small double handed rods. Where most switch rods are single handed rods that can be used in the double handed format, Microspey are the opposite - a proper double hander that can be used single handed.

What is the difference? The main key differences are the handle configuration and the full action at all given line weights.

All six Microspey rods have a full deep loading action. This not only helps with ease of casting but also playing fish. Those are wonderful for playing, and landing grilse, sea trout and Arctic char. In fact, they’re perfect for the job.

This range of rods puts the fun back into fishing for hooking and playing small or medium sized fish. They also perform great when fishing in loch and lakes for trout or from a boat.

They are firstly double handed rods that can be used for trout and grayling in tight areas where overhead casting is not easy. They can also be used for single handed fishing using long casting stokes to push flies through a strong wind. These are for the experienced double handed caster to have fun with when targeting smaller fish. Or single-handed fishers who want to try double handed fishing but not for salmon or larger fish.

Ian recalls “I was recently called by a friend of mine who happens to own several beats on the river Deveron, asking if I could help with something. His problem was he had lost the last four grilse he had hooked. I quickly established this was because the rod he was using was overly stiff for the job. Grilse have notoriously soft mouths, so without enough flex/give in the rod, particularly when the fish is near the end of the fight and on a short line. After leaving him with a 5/6 weight 11’ 3” Microspey the next 5 grilse, as well as a 12lb salmon were landed without further loss. Not only did he land all the fish, but the fun he had playing the fish was at a different level.”

The range covers fishing small overgrown streams with 3/4 weight and dry flies, to fishing an 8/9 weight with deep streamers on wider rivers and lakes. All the rods in the range have the same handle and guide spacing configuration and come in a Cordura tube and bag.

  • Guides - Seaguide stripper + snake guides
  • Reel Seat - ALPS
  • Handle Type - Double Handle

Reel Size: The minimum size reel for these rods is the CF20 7/8 Reel, this reel will hold the IG Micro Spey Fly Line and up to 70m of backing (depending on the backing diameter). The CF20 9/10 Reel is recommended if you want to use 100m or more backing.

First time out with the microspey 4/5 and I love it. No fish alas but it cast like a dream. I tried a nymph/ spider rig with a 5ft intermediate poly leader and a single small streamer and 8ft slow sink polyleader. No issues at all, I will use the rod mostly for streamer fishing , when we get some water!! I don't doubt it would handle grilse easy enough too. Great price and excellent bit of kit.

I am now into season three with my 7/8 Micro Spey rod. I use it in the smaller salmon rivers and it has become my go to rod.
I have landed grilse, sea trout and salmon with this rod up to 16 pounds on it with no issues whatsoever with it.
It casts beautifully even with quite a heavy fly and sinking leader of 9 feet.
It definitely out performs my big named rods which costs more than double the price of my Cadence rod.
I have even used it in the sea in Denmark and landed a number of good sea trout on it.
I have recommended this rod to a number of my friends who have now got one and not one of them has been disappointed.

If i work backwards i ended up with a #9-10 rod combo which truly exceed expectations. I have learned all my fly fishing as many others by self taught through research. My double handed casting all watching Ian Gordon’s videos. So i decided that my 14ft 9 rod is awesome but i don’t always fish big rivers and not wealthy enough to fish for Salmon everyday. So my goal is to target large river trout and the micro spey from
day one has me covered. Powerful but light absolutely a single hander but when you need the micro spey it’s 100% there. I said work backwards and i did originally order a #4-5 and i would have if i just returned it and not chosen bigger would never have known how good the range actually is. So if your looking for a lighter rod i would suggest you consider if you want to double hander for trout edge up a couple of sizes to get that firmer rod. i thought i was getting an equivalent to my sage 9ft 6 but a 4-5 was more like my whippy 11ft Nymph rod. So i think the sweet spot for my next all rounder would be to match my sage a #7-8. Don’t worry if you get it wrong. i received mine tested it for 10 mins packed it up shipped it back and the replacement was with me soon after. Certainly recommend this brand. My concern as always is limited warranty. I think this could be extended. It is a trade off good value £300 with a free matched line versus £800 for another brand and £130 for a line but a 25 year warranty. I like choice and i can’t afford £1,000 a pop. So i choose wisely and try to be careful.

Thank you Martine the trip went well and your line arrived 1hr before i left so win win.

Having been a Spey caster for many years, I needed a two handed rod that could double-up for salmon and sea trout fishing small to medium size rivers. Congratulations, Ian Gordon and the Cadence team - You nailed it! I absolutely love this rod. Matching the rod with the 6/7 Micro Spey line gave perfect balance, with a nice 'feel' for loading the rod, even at short distances. Only one problem, my wife has now commandeered it, so I may have to buy another (7/8)! I'm happy to recommend this rod and line setup to beginners and advanced Spey casters alike, who I'm sure will have a great time using it.

I've got three micro spey rods.

I use the 3/4 weight for trout spey with wet flies and streamers, the 6/7 weight for salmon in low water and the 9/10 high water.

They are all excellent and are beautifully matched with their respective lines.

They are much better quality than more famous and expensive fly-fishing brands.

Great looking rod feels nice in the hand have not managed to use it yet due to weather rivers to low and water temp to high. I will give feedback as soon as I can get out .The reel is also a nice quality and feels great on the rod bonus of a freel spare spool is very handy along with the the free line great value .
