Nylon is heavier than water and should sink. Now the good news. We can help it to ‘float’.

Float Mono is different to Sinking mono and not the same line in a different colour. It is formulated specifically for when a floating line provides an advantage. This really helps to pick the line up when striking or mending it to a float downstream. The surface is very slick due to its coating. It doesn’t really float as such but grips the surface or is gripped by the surface tension better.

It is a standard stretch line but one which doesn’t stretch so much like some so that it proves problematic at distance. This stretch is also needed to help with absorbing the lunges of even the biggest fish especially under the rod top. It also doesn’t want to suddenly ‘bottom out’ but gives the angler enough ‘feel’ so the playing technique can be adjusted accordingly.

A soft and supple line, not as hard as Sinking mono, but one which is still tough, durable and long lasting. Its formulation provides the extra finesse often needed when float fishing. B/S for B/S it is thinner than Sinking Mono so peels off of the reel’s spool better and casts light floats better.

It ties up extremely well and can be used with a wide variety of common knots from Grinner, Palomar, Half Blood, Water and even Whipping, Snell and No-Knot. It has a very reliable and consistent knot strength.

It’s parallel wound to keep the line as smooth as possible and vastly reduce the possibility of overlaps, ripples and the ‘lumps and bumps’ commonly associated with standard ‘cross’ line winding processes. This then helps to provide better casting and trotting performance. This winding process is very slow and obviously costs more but makes for a much nicer line.

Common winding on the left in comparison to Parallel or Level winding on the right

Being available in either 100m or 300m means you can load a shallow ‘Match’ type spool with just the required 100m and with the bigger 300m you can fill 3 x 100m or at even 4 x 75m which is especially useful if Closed face reels are used as these reels normally have little travel within the gears to provide good line lay. This old trick helps to reduce the dreaded ‘bedding’ of the layers of line – especially after playing a large fish like chub – and causing problems when casting again and trotting. Often other brands 250m products seem like a bit of a waste for most float fishing situations where they can only fill 2x100m and then you could end up wasting the 50m.

Diameters and breaking stains cover the most commonly required sizes for Float work as well as including very light situations when 0.14mm might be needed. Due to its post-extrusion processes it can be ‘cut’ under the water’s surface with a quick flick of the rod tip. This is very useful when fishing close to islands or features or on a river with a difficult downstream wind and the line needs to be sunk. The good thing is that it doesn’t want to sink so deep like some other lines that it is a severe problem when striking.

It is a medium stretch line (slightly less than either Float or Premium) which doesn’t streeeeeetch like some and mask bites at distance. It is designed primarily as a sinking line but can be made to float if coated or sprayed. But, straight off of the spool, is best suited to bottom work.

It is a medium stretch line similar to SINKING MONO and which doesn’t stretch so much like some others and mask bites at distance. However, it has all the stretch needed to help with absorbing the lunges of even the biggest fish which is important when fish are under the rod top.

A very tough, durable and long lasting line which is slightly harder and more abrasion resistant than SINKING MONO but still remains supple. Its formulation is very well suited to the rigours of big fish work whether they be river barbel or specimen lake carp. Also bear in mind that thicker lines will be (generally speaking) more abrasion resistant than thinner lines simply because there is more material. So the 15lb is more abrasion resistant than 12lb, 12lb is more abrasion resistant than 10lb etc. The other thing is that if you soak your line (prior to fishing or even during a session) it will become more supple and ‘softer’. Nylon is Hygroscopic. This also means that it can dry out and have the opposite effect.

It ties up extremely well and can be used with a wide variety of common knots from Grinner, Palomar, Half Blood, Water and No-Knot. It has a very good knot strength and, with well tied knots, should easily achieve the rated B/S. Ultimately though different knots can produce different results. For what it’s worth we calibrated it with the common 5 turn Grinner.

It’s parallel wound on the 300m spools to keep the line as smooth as possible and vastly reduce the possibility of overlaps, ripples and the compression which can be associated with some ‘cross’ line winding processes – especially on small diameter spools. This then helps to keep it soft and supple and provides excellent casting performance especially at distance. This process is very slow and obviously costs more. It’s also why the much bigger 600m spools cannot yet include this feature. But these are supplied on much bigger diameter spools so there are fewer coils per 100m anyway. This ensures that the line is as smooth as it can be and still superior to many.

Being available in either 300m or 600m spools means you can load a typical capacity ‘specimen’ type reel with just the required amount and with the bigger 600m spool fill 2 typical spools. Obviously, the amount you put on or can put on your reel depends on the chosen line size and its diameter.

The range of breaking stains cover the most commonly required sizes for specimen work from 6lb to 15lb. However, even the 6lb and 8lb sizes are not overly thick as, generally, our Specimen mono is likely thinner when comparing B/S per diameter to some other brands. This makes it very good for heavy duty trotting when targeting barbel in fast flows. And obviously easier to cast with.

The colour is dark olive and so would lighten slightly with continual use and the bleaching effect of sunlight. This is completely normal. Unless the line has had lots of use and it is probably time to change it anyway the knot strength remains high despite some colour fade.

PREMIUM-GRADE JAPANESE FLUOROCARBON

A real Fluorocarbon – not a coated nylon

Withstands UV sunlight exceptionally well

Denser and heavier than nylon monos

Surprisingly supple but stiffer than nylon and stiffer than our standard Fluorocarbon Pure

Durable and abrasion-resistant

Standard stretch which provides an excellent shock absorber

High knot strength

5-part spool with protective flanges and central button

40m spool sizes which are compact and fit most tackle boxes

Clear line with a refractive index close to that of water making it almost invisible in water

Fluorocarbon Pure Specimen Carp differs from our other Fluorocarbon Pure but is still a superior grade Fluorocarbon and not a coated nylon.

Fluorocarbon resists sunlight much more than nylon lines and does not degrade the same.
